- <H1> About
- <H3> I remember the first time I read Beowulf. I was sitting in Mr. Nicholson’s Senior English class, prepared for another “popcorn reading” and ready for it to be over. We opened our anthologies to the correct page, started on one side of the room, and read aloud–stanza by painstaking stanza. I remember the first time I tried to read The Great Gatsby, thinking, “what is the point of this novel?” The monotony of elevated diction-meets-time period that I could not care less about. Don’t even get me started on Shakespeare…I remember reading Hamlet, struggling like every other teenager, and giving up. Why would our English teacher make us read outdated, made-up words? What was the point? Okay, I’ll stop hating on the classics, but hear me out. How can we, as future teachers, change the outlook on Great Books that most (if not all) teenagers have? This project is intended for a high school English class to use in conjunction with the classic Great Books that we’ve all (as English majors) come to love. As you explore this website, I ask that you keep an open mind. Changing the classics wasn’t easy to do–I’m sure we all feel strongly about our favorite pieces of literature, as do I. I ask that you step into the shoes of the typical high school student. What do you enjoy? Being in charge, right? So why not let our students make their own choices about their literature, their Great Books? As you make your way through the ‘Story’ portion of this website, make choices that you would make in your own life, not those that necessarily happen in the stories themselves. Have fun. Explore. Most importantly, think about how this website could be used in the classroom. I like to think that we will continue using Great Books in our current curriculum. That said, I also like to think that more modern books could one day be considered “Great.” What does the future of literature look like? This is a website for Future Great Books. As you explore, think about what the future will look like. Thank you for visiting and enjoy! -Tess (Mother, Wife, Writer, Lifelong Reader Extraordinaire)“... and she loved a boy very, very much-- even more than she loved herself.” -Shel Silverstein, The Giving Tree“Did I do anything wrong today," he said, "or has the world always been like this and I've been too wrapped up in myself to notice?” -The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
